The Grandmother Test: A Simple Rule for Navigating the Modern Supermarket
'Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.' A deep dive into ancestral auditing and avoiding ultra-processed traps.
The Confusion of Choice
Walk into a modern supermarket and you are bombarded with over 40,000 items. Labels scream "Gluten-Free," "Keto-Friendly," "Heart Healthy," and "Natural." It is paralyzing.
But you don't need a PhD in nutrition to navigate this. You just need one simple heuristic, popularized by Michael Pollan:
"Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."
Applying the Test
Let's apply this logic to common items:
- Eggs: Yes. Your great-grandmother knew exactly what they were.
- Steak: Yes.
- Apple: Yes.
- Go-Gurt Portable Yogurt Tube: No. Where is the cow? Why is it blue?
- Impossible Burger: Definitely not. A patty made in a lab with heme engineered from yeast would be terrified her.
This simple filter instantly eliminates 90% of the ultra-processed garbage in the store.
The Pantry Audit
Ready to reclaim your kitchen? Here is a 3-step audit you can do today:
1. The Ingredient Count
Pick up a packaged item. Does it have more than 5 ingredients? If yes, be suspicious. If it has more than 10, put it back.
2. The Pronunciation Test
Can a third-grader pronounce every ingredient on the label?
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole? Throw it out.
- High Fructose Corn Syrup? Garbage.
- Potassium Benzoate? Gone.
3. The "Factory Required" Question
Could you make this at home if you had the time?
- You could mill wheat into flour and bake bread. (Pass)
- You could not extrude corn, spray it with synthetic slurry, and shape it into a Dorito in your home kitchen. (Fail)
Why This Matters
Our bodies co-evolved with whole foods over millions of years. We know how to digest meat, plants, and fats. We do not have the biological software to decode the "nutritional noise" of industrial additives, seed oils, and artificial flavors.
Keep it simple. Eat plants and animals. If it comes in a box with a cartoon character on it, it's not food—it's a product.
